Ubisoft's The Crew can't be played without internet connection !

Ubisoft is all set to release its Next-Gen Racing Game - The Crew

A Need for Speed-like street racing game with a ton of singleplayer and multiplayer options, set on a ridiculously massive map that spans from Los Angeles to New York City.

But the game is in "Always-Online" mode. You need a permanent network connection to play this game ! Whether you play on console or on PC, you'll need an internet connection to play.

Creative Directory, Julian Derighty added :-

"Our approach to that is this is a living world," Gerighty said. "We don't really see the point of offline. Did you ever play World of Warcraft? So World of Warcraft, you don't play offline. It doesn't mean you can't play by yourself—when I played World of Warcraft, I played it for about twelve months, single-player only, without talking to anyone. That's our approach."

What would happen if your network goes down while playing the game ?

"They won't be able to save the game, unfortunately," Derighty said. "All our saves are server-based, it's one of those things that this new generation… it's just like World of Warcraft. If the internet connection goes on World of Warcraft, that's it, your saved game goes. It's one of the unfortunate side-effects, but I think [we're] going to a world where the experiences demand that."

He emphasized that the single-player story can be played all by yourself… as long as you have an internet connection. "It just becomes that much more interesting if you're connected, and the world around you is living, with other drivers and potential encounters."

  1. While a comparison to WoW is moderately relevant in that they are both living worlds, the living world of WoW is a paid subscription. This game is not. If WoW goes down, I would get a refund of money paid if in advance. With the Crew, you are out of luck if tomorrow they decide to deactivate their servers. More important, in The Crew, the other players are not needed and there are AI cars for everything. Not sure about WoW but I think other players are needed for certain quests and there is not really a story. That all said, the big kicker is that The Crew compares itself to other racers in Open World play, such as NFS or Forza Horizon. Those games can all be played offline. The Crew can not. It won't even allow you to go into the game if their servers or XBOX Live is not up. I nearly returned the game on the spot when I realized this as the day I got it, XBOX Live went down for XBOX ONE and I could not play my $60 game 30 mins after I bought it.

  2. Bullshit. I should not need an internet connection to play a game. When it says press any button to start, it forces me to sign into PSN. I do not have a PSN, nor do I want one. I can't believe I wasted money on a game that I thought had an offline single player. Fucking unbelievable.

  3. I wonder how it makes sense to the developers that someone will buy a cd for the purpose of offline play at your convenience only to discover that you need an Internet connection to play the game. Retards.
